Broadcast Cover Letter

What makes a broadcast cover letter different from a traditional cover? A broadcast cover letter is written to companies that are not advertising a current job opening. While there might be opportunities within a particular organization, if you don’t have a connection or are not aware of the opening, you are really applying blind.

That is where the broadcast letter should be used. You want to be proactive in establishing communication with the company. Your approach in writing the broadcast letter is to provide the reader with information regarding how your qualifications can fill a need for the company.

You want to make sure you do a strong job of marketing your qualifications while simultaneously stimulating the recipient’s interest.

Throughout the letter you should be providing information regarding how you can meet a need. Here is a sample letter to help you get started:

Having conducted research regarding [XYZ Corporation] it has come to my attention that you are presently expanding your operations both domestically and internationally. My background includes professional experiences in Europe and the United States, and I believe I could add sustained value as you plan for short- and long-term growth.

In addition to being fluent in French and Spanish, I have also lived and worked throughout Europe; my understanding of cultural nuances will enable me to establish professional relationships to launch new business initiatives. More importantly, I have spent the past ten years contributing in a manufacturing environment; and I am well versed in current industry trends. From implementing processes and procedures, to guiding the professional development of multi-functional teams, my efforts have reduced operating costs and increased revenue.

Complementing my professional experiences, I also possess a Master of Business Administration and continue to increase my knowledge of industry best practices through self-directed training. Accustomed to working with people at all professional levels, I am receptive to new ideas and welcome the opportunity to share information in an open forum, which would prove valuable as the company pursues new affiliate partners.

I would be happy to meet at your convenience to discuss how my background and qualifications would add immediate value to your mission and goals. Please feel free to contact me at the number above to arrange a time to speak.

Sincerely,

Name

Enclosure: Résumé

As you can tell, the letter speaks solely about what you offer the organization – not what you are looking for. Since you are not aware of an opening you will need to be diligent about following up. Make sure you keep notes regarding the date and company name, and to whom you addressed the letter. It is best if you have a name. In the absence of that, address the letter in the following way: Dear Human Resource Representative or Dear Director of Human Resources. Continued diligence will enable you to track your progress. Continue to network and conduct research. You never know what you might uncover!
